Overview

Weaving the history and culture of the region into the design, this resort replicates a ‘village of water’ by enhancing the natural features of existing cenotes with a network of freshwater canals and lagoons. In homage to Mayan settlement patterns, the hotel is situated behind an existing mangrove fringe to maintain a harmonious equilibrium between guests and wildlife. The 128 low-rise suites are raised on stilts to support a more pristine sensibility, serving as a model for low impact development.

The separation of infrastructure from the most sensitive ecosystems aid in minimizing the need for vehicular access and enhanced the return of bird species to the restored mangrove habitats. Limestone, wood, water, and indigenous plant species are integrated and preserved in harmony with the natural surroundings to establish a tourist destination that organically celebrates Mayan culture.

Accommodations are complemented with rooftop sundecks or patios, plunge pools, and private boat docks. Amenities include a luxury state-of-the-art spa, family pool, and beach club.

EDSA was commissioned to create an overall vision for development. The culturally and ecologically sensitive design vernacular places Mayakobá as an unmatched bio-diverse resort enclave that acts as an extension of its history and natural surroundings.
